What is Yohimbe?

There is a yohimbe tree that grows in western Africa. It's a kind of tall evergreen that is actually quite common. Bark from this tree has long been used for herbal purposes, as a sort of folk treatment for various ailments. Because of a compound within the bark, which has been named yohimbine, the bark is used both as an aphrodisiac and to treat erectile dysfunction in men.

How to Use Yohimbe

The belief that yohimbe as a dietary supplement can increase sexual desire has pushed it all the way across the Atlantic Ocean into American marketplaces.

It is said that women will feel a stronger sexual desire if they take yohimbe with arginine. Both of these can be taken as herbs or as herbal capsules, which you can find easily in most health food stores.

Men often use yohimbe to treat their erectile dysfunction. Yohimbine is thought to increase the flow of blood to the penis, which would both allow a man to better get and keep his erection.

Yohimbe bark is sometimes smoked due to its ability to cause hallucinations, but this is extremely dangerous and should definitely not be done with the herbal yohimbe that you find in stores.

Bark should be turned into tea. Before drinking the tea, make sure you read the warnings in the next section.

How to Make Yohimbe Tea

  • Bring water (preferably distilled or deionized) to a boil and continue boiling.

  • Put six teaspoons shaved or two teaspoons powdered yohimbe bark and the equivalent of 500 mg of Vitamin C into the boiling water. Let it boil for just 10 more minutes.

  • Remove the yohimbe tea from heat and allow it to cool.

  • If you wish, poor the tea through a strainer or cheese-cloth to separate the liquid from the yohimbe bark. Otherwise, simply drink the tea when it is cooled enough.

  • You may want to use agave nectar, sugar, or honey to sweeten.

After drinking, wait 30 minutes for effect.

Warnings and Cautions

Yohimbe is in no way an approved treatment for erectile dysfunction. Medical studies have not proved yohimbe to be effective in increasing sex drive or in fixing erectile dysfunction.

Never drink more than two cups a day.

Do not drink alcohol or take opiates when using yohimbe.

Do not use yohimbe if you have any of the following medical conditions:

  • Diabetes

  • Liver or kidney disease

  • Heart disease

  • High blood pressure

  • Ulcers

  • Depression

  • Mental health disorders

Yohimbe should not be combined with any of these medications:

  • Antidepressants

  • Tranquilizers

  • Blood thinners

  • Blood pressure drugs

Side Effects

Yohimbe is known to cause a number of other effects to humans when consumed as tea, smoke, or even in supplement capsules. These side effects are very common, unlike those you get from erectile dysfunction pharmaceuticals like Cialis.

  • Anxiety and Panic

  • Dizziness

  • High blood pressure

  • Headaches

  • Nausea

  • Tremors

  • Sleeplessness

  • Accelerated heart rate

  • Kidney problems

  • Confusion

Compared to Cialis

Next to the leading pharmaceutical, yohimbe is simply not anywhere near as effective at helping with ED by the most generous estimates.

Cialis is also extremely safe, especially compared to yohimbe, and is similar in price online.
