In today’s sexual milieu, impotence is by far one of the most serious problems faced by men. Sexual impotence was once perceived as a condition that strikes men who are 40 years old and above. However, current statistics show that it is now commonly diagnosed among younger men.

Since sexual performance is commonly associated with a man’s sense of worth, sexual impotence can result to a number of psychological and emotional traumas such as shame and loss. Men tend to measure life’s success by their capacity to satisfy their partners in bed. This does not mean, however, that all men who experience this problem immediately seek help from professionals. Most of today’s records on impotence basically cover complicated cases, for some men no longer consult to doctors for treatment when their conditions are noted as lighter case of impotence.

Causes of impotence

Generally, there are three main causes of sexual impotence among men---physical, psychological, and lifestyle.

1.Physical

As for the physical aspect of sexual impotence, most of the noted causes are curable or avoidable. However, there are some physical causes that are considered incurable, thereby requiring serious treatments and surgeries.

Among the many causes of sexual impotence are hormonal imbalance, damaged penis structure, nervous system disorders, and drug/medicinal side-effects.

2.Psychological

Impotence due to psychological causes is also a very common phenomena among men. This may be the result of an extreme trauma that further drives a man to feel anxiety, depression, and stress. The sexual capacities of men with mental disorders may also be affected.

Aside from these, psychological impotence may occur in situations when a man no longer feels any sexual rapport or affinity with this partner. The loss of a man’s interest in sex may also be a result of fatigue and too much stress.

3.Lifestyle

Aside from physical and psychological causes, lifestyle preference is known to worsen most impotency conditions among men. According to studies, men who use drugs like cocaine, nicotine, and heroine are most likely to experience sexual impotence. Most obese men also tend to lose interest in sex as they become more conscious of their bodies. Men who exercise daily and have a well-nourished body are more confident about their bodies, thus, resulting to a healthier sex life.

Treatments for sexual impotence

Today, treatments for sexual impotence vary according to origin. If the cause of impotence is purely psychological, experts generally suggest therapies and supportive psychotherapy sessions. Counseling is also one of the basic parts of impotency treatments with psychological causes.

Meanwhile, surgery and implants are the best treatments commonly recommended by most doctors to sexual impotency cases with physical causes. In addition, oral medicaments are also prescribed by doctors along with such surgical procedure.

There are also alternative oral medications like herbal capsules that many men use today. Although these oral medications are noted to be ineffective and are not prescribed or recommended by most doctors, many still purchase and use these products due to their helpful psychological effects.
