Buying Your Wedding Petticoat

When trying on wedding dresses you will be given a petticoats with hoops in it to wear under the dress if it has a full skirt. If the dress you choose has a full skirt you will need to either hire or buy a petticoat to hold out the skirt of your dress. These are not uncomfortable to wear. In fact if you marry on a hot day the petticoat will hold your skirt away from your legs and be much cooler! These can be fairly full for a princess line dress, with fullness and netting at calf level for fish tail gowns or very very full for dresses like the one worn by Jordan.

The shop where you buy your dress should hire you one at a reasonable price. By reasonable I mean no more than twenty pounds. If the shop charges an exorbitant rate to hire a petticoat or will only sell you one then look on the internet. It is possible to buy petticoats on the internet for a lot less than most shops charge. For example a very popular style can be purchased for around £50 from an internet site, prices do vary so look at several sites, which is a lot less than bridal shop prices of around £90. If you need a really full petticoat then you really should check out web sites for prices because some shops charge as much as £300 for the fullest one.

Do not assume that because you are buying from an internet site that you are getting a bargain. Look at several sites and you will see that the price for the same petticoat can vary but up to £50 in the case of Jupon 185. This and other petticoats are available at excellent prices from www.princesssparkle.co.uk.

They come in ivory and white and although you will not see the petticoat under your dress we recommend if your dress is either white, diamond white or a pale colour e.g. pale blue or pink then you should go for a white petticoat. Ivory petticoats are best for ivory or gold dresses. Black petticoats are also available.

You will need to have the petticoat before your dress fitting since if you need the hem taking up it is absolutely essential that you wear the petticoat for the fitting since full one can raise the level of the hem considerably.

You could also look on e-bay where you might be able to find one quite cheaply but we recommend you check if the metal bones can be removed so that you can wash it. Some of the cheaper petticoats have the metal bones sewn into the petticoat making it difficult to wash and dry. A good make petticoat will be washable so buying a second hand one can be acceptable if you are on a tight budget.

I have been in the bridal business for over ten years and currently run a high street shop and an online store selling accessories.
