Till a few years ago, only the bride’s attire on the wedding day was the talk of the town, but these days a lot of attention is given to the groom’s attire as well. He is equally conscious of his look and wants to look his best day on every occasion.
Unlike an Indian bride, who is supposed to adorn typical Indian attire, a groom can be more experimental. He can wear anything from a tuxedo to a traditional sherwani.
While a tuxedo is more of a western look, a traditional sherwani, jodhpuri suit or a kurta pajama, gives the groom a more ethnic look. If a groom decides to wear a tuxedo, he should make sure that every detail of his ensemble synchronizes with the look. He can’t afford to go wrong on the wedding day. Usually, the grooms prefer to wear a black colour suit but these days they are experimenting with a lot of different colors. One can see them wearing greys, whites, blues, greens etc.
A tuxedo usually makes the man look smart and sophisticated. In fact, its one of the most comfortable wedding attires for the groom.
If no a tuxedo than the groom can opt for a simple formal suit, which not only makes a person look smart and formal but is also the perfect wear for that perfect occasion.
But these formal suits or tuxedos don’t give that authentic Indian groom look. An Indian bride wearing a typical ethnic Indian dress looks perfect with a groom adorning Indian attire. That’s how both complement each other on the day which is the most important to them.
Different types of Indian Groom wear:-
Sherwani – Sherwani can be described as a long jacket, which is usually of a knee length or longer with embroidery on it that gives it a classy ethnic and traditional look. It has a round collar and is buttoned up from the front. It is mainly worn with churidhar pyjamas (a kind of tights) or jhodpurs (breeches) or straight pants. A sherwani looks great if it complemented with a contrasting lower. To give the sherwani a designer look, at times you will see the groom also carrying a stole that complements the rest of the attire.
Jodhpuri Suit – A jodhpuri suit is pretty similar to a western suit, the only difference is the jacket. The jacket is buttoned up in front and has a round or Chinese collar. It is usually worn with normal trousers which should match the colour of the jacket. In a jodhpuri jacket, usually the embroidery is on the collar and in the centre along the button line. At times, the groom wears a round neck top either of the same colour or in a contrasting colour to that of the jacket.
Kurta Pajama – Kurta pajama obviously includes a kurta (top) and a pyjama (bottom). Kurta can be described as a long top. Till sometime back, the length of the kurta was kept till the knee but these days the groom usually wears a calf length kurta. Kurta has slits on either side from the waist below giving freedom for movement. Embroidery on the Kurta makes it look all the more rich. One can be more experimental with a Kurta as there is no particular restriction. It can either be a fully-embroidered kurta or can have embroidery on its neck and sleeves. The pyjamas could be those like tights or a looser version and can be of contrasting color of kurta. Kurta pajama looks all the more better if accessorised with a stole in a colour that complements the outfit.
Color - Traditionally the colour that the groom wears on his wedding day is off white/cream. But these days, grooms prefer to be a little experimental and have started wearing darker colours like maroon, dark blue and even black. The fabric used to make these dresses can be anything from pure silk, brocade to terry wool.
All kinds of grooms’ outfits, be it the sherwani, the jodphuri suit or the kurta pyjama, are usually made on order so that they fit them perfectly. A groom can get these designed and made from boutiques that specialise in wedding range of clothes or if he can afford, he can get it stitched from the designers. To get his dress ready on time, the groom should be well-prepared in advance.
