A winter wedding offers unique considerations when compared to the traditional wedding season, but that does not mean you should move your dream wedding to a different time of year. You can make a winter wedding extra special and do it for less since it is not "wedding season". Consider these five important areas to make your winter wedding day one to remember.
.Colors: Red and green seem like a no-brainer. In many cases, the church and event hall will already be decorated in these colors, saving you money for decorations and from asking these venues to remove all the decorations just for your event. If you choose to think outside the box, consider a few other options. Silver and white, silver and blue or burgundy, forest green and gold are all rich colors that make for a beautiful wedding. Each of these color sets fit in well with the holiday season, but will not make your guests feel like they are attending a Christmas-themed wedding.
.Decor: If you go with the Christmas theme, consider putting mini and life-sized trees around the reception hall. It will give a warm and homey feel. Combine the trees with white poinsettias, pillar candles with pine boughs on a reflective plate or bowls of water with cranberries and floating candles as a centerpiece. If you are feeling crafty, consider making gingerbread houses as wedding table decorations. You can purchase tiny white Christmas tree lights to outline doorways and windows and mix in ornaments available in bulk. Fake snow is no longer tacky, in fact some looks very professional. Consider sprinkling snow on the tables and even use it instead of a runner in the church. If you want to go all out, you may want to rent a snow machine to create a true winter wonderland.
.Flowers: Talk with your local florist about what is in season and what you may be able to get a deal on before you settle on your final flower arrangement. If you talk the florist about your theme, colors and other plans, they will be able to help choose the best flowers at a good price. If you are looking for a little inspiration, consider dusty millers, baby blue eucalyptus, roses, lilies, holly or pine tree greenery. All of these are great items that will really give your wedding that wintry feel.
.What to Wear: You want to make sure you and your bridal party stays warm, but those off the shoulder gowns are too beautiful to pass up. Instead of searching for a gown with sleeves that you like, consider giving your bridesmaids shawls and faux fur muffs. This will drive home your winter theme and make sure everyone is warm and happy while taking pictures. You can even add a few sparkly diamond accessories to remind the guests of ice.
.Food & Favors: When choosing the food, keep winter in mind. Look for items that are cold weather themed, such as pumpkin soup or a squash side dish. At the bar, offer eggnog, spiced wines and cider. When considering the cake, look for one that is all white and decorated with snowflakes. Instead of traditional wedding cake toppers find a wedding-themed snow globe and place it on top of the cake. Your favors can be unique as well. Ornaments can be personalized wedding favors and place card holders. Consider leaving your guests a small snow globe or hot chocolate mix with marshmallows.
