Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder, or ADD/ADHD for short, is a neurological disorder (although some believe that is not a disorder at all) that has become increasingly common in today's society. Affecting both adults and children, the disorder is characterized by excessive energy and hyperactivity. Sufferers tend to be impulsive and easily distracted. The exact cause is unknown, however it has been linked to a chemical imbalance in the brain, particularly of dopamine and acetylcholine, and a poor diet high in processed foods and sugar. Currently, the most common treatment for ADD/ADHD is medication. Other treatments include music, bathing, a change in diet and sustained physical activity.

Sustained Physical Activity and Marital Arts

Research has found that sustained physical activity with a focus on the martial arts can dramatically improve an individual's ability to cope with ADD/ADHD. As an outlet for excess energy, it has a positive effect on self esteem and self confidence. Its meditative element can also improve concentration and focus.

One believed cause of ADD/ADHD is an excessive consumption of refined sugar, which can worsen hyperactivity. Sustained physical activity helps the body process whatever is consumed more efficiently and more importantly, provides a foundation that supports a healthy lifestyle and a better understanding of body mechanics. As a result an improvement in eating habits may follow.

It works the mind and body: learning how to punch or kick requires both physical and mental concentration. As a result, it is a holistic approach toward the treatment of ADD/ADHD. And since there are a number of things to learn in a single class, martial arts is constantly challenging and reduces the risk of the student becoming distracted by something else.

Not all martial arts schools and teachers are created equal. Therefore, it is vital that if you're seeking martial arts as a viable treatment for your child's ADD/ADHD, shop around. A good teacher understands that teaching an individual with the disorder can be a challenge however will strive to alter their teaching style to address the particular needs of that individual. This provides a more conducive learning environment in which the entire class thrives.
