The acceptance and rejection of homosexuality is a topic that goes on and on and the discussion never seems to end. Looking at it critically it is more acknowledged in the united states of America than in any other part of the world. However their are some laws in some states that are enforced to discriminate against homosexuality. That does not mean that we do not have gays and lesbians in the top corporate positions. The sexual orientation is usually attacked on religious grounds. A recent study that was carried out using e-mails shows the rate of acceptance in the American society. One lesbian known by the name Jackie, says that nowadays she does not feel the need to hide her sexuality like she used to. She does not go telling all who cares to listen because it not a conversational topic but when the issue comes up she announces her sexual orientation with no fear.

The acceptance and rejection of homosexuality is usually based on how much the community knows you and what they get to know about you first. Jackie says that people who know who she is as a person before knowing her sexuality are more respectful compared to people who find out that she is a lesbian before they both get a chance of interacting. Even the most conservative people who learnt my personality have their opinions but they keep them to themselves. James and smith have been in a gay relationship for the last 30 years. They graduated in the 70's and they say that by that time they really faced a hard time from their peers and the community at large. They have seen considerable change since then. Our friends in grade school could not understand how we were harboring secret thoughts about each other instead if being busy dating girls.

For James and smith, they had to forego there college sponsorship in order to maintain their unorthodox relationship. The outside influence on the gay community can be overwhelming but sometimes gays and lesbians have their personal issues to deal with. Smith says that his partner had to struggle with his sexuality and felt embarrassed sometimes when he was supposed to stand up for his right. This issue about acceptance and rejection of homosexuality makes the victims to feel ashamed and this may leave traces of damage in their self-esteem. They feel isolated and somewhere on the periphery and that is why they are always trying to fit in the society by enforcing some acceptance.

The close minded people have learnt to be more tolerant and acknowledgeable about homosexuality. They are compassionate about all people whether they are straight or gay. This is because the community has erased the old stereotype that potrayed homosexuals as rapists, child molesters and cross-dressers. It is now common knowledge that they are law abiding citizens, who go about their business in a respectful and peaceful manner. They contribute to the good of the nation through their working in all walks of life. The acceptance and rejection of homosexuality is heavily influenced by the media. Television and radio stations have played a major role in changing the general perception of homosexuality.
