One thing that is common in almost all types of world wedding traditions is a cake. No matter where the wedding is taking place, the event is incomplete without cake. It is a long-standing tradition and has a very lengthy history. It has successfully passed the test of the time. The looks may vary; the materials used in the cakes may differ; the theme might be different, but it has been one of the main attractions in a marriage celebration.
A Long-Standing Tradition
Over the lengthy history of its use in marriage events, a cake has been representing different ideals. These traditions probably started from the period of the Roman Empire. In documented history, it was during this age when people started using cakes during marriages, and very soon, it gained popularity and became one of the most common world wedding traditions. In the very beginning, during the Roman Empire, it is believed that the groom was supposed to eat a small part of a cake and then throw the rest of it over the head of the bride. This may sound absurd, but the whole act actually would symbolize a message that the groom had become the master of the bride and that the bride was going to lose her virginity.
Symbol Of High Status
The use of cake in these events has also been a status symbol. Before the Victorian era, the highly refined sugar was very expensive, and only rich people could afford to buy the same. People used to prepare white icing on cakes -which was made from refined sugar. This type of cake would turn out to be a status symbol, as it would show that the families involved in the marriage were affluent enough to buy refined sugar. It also contributed to the popularity of cakes as world wedding traditions.
Made For Each Other
Cake feeding is another common tradition, where the groom and the bride feed each other a piece of cake. The message that it symbolizes is that they are made for each other and that they will always take care of each other throughout their lives.
Find Out Who You Are Going To Marry
In many parts of the world, it is believed that if a person keeps a wedding cake under his pillow, the person who he is destined to marry will come into his dream. Since keeping a cake under the pillow is a tough task, the common practice is to use a small crumb of cake attached to a small object, such as a ring, instead of the whole cake.
Multi-Tiered Cakes
The use of multi-tiered cakes is also a common world wedding tradition. There was a time in history when only rich people could afford such cakes, as they used to be very expensive. Besides, interestingly, they would use an artificial top layer because they had no idea how to support the top layer on the soft base of a cake.
Many wedding world traditions revolve around the use of cakes. Even today, a marriage event is not complete without it. Such world wedding traditions make the event more interesting and memorable not only for the bride and the groom, but also for the guests attending the event.
