Is artificial grass a true alternative to natural grass? Let us find out. Many people have issues and concerns to switching to this alternative. What many people do not realize is that artificial turf has been around for a few decades now. With that said, many developments on synthetic grass have been made that include improvements on its performance and environmental factors. Synthetic turf distributors acknowledge the concerns for a better Eco system and "going green," that they have implemented new technology and alternatives to their system.

Artificial grass is no walk in the park when deciding to choose to install it in your home, business, or for sports and recreation. While it may save you tons in the long run, and less maintenance, it is very expensive. The installation of artificial turf includes all the materials that are being used. Those materials are the turf, infill, under layers, and the equipment. You will also have to pay for the labor costs and other products to keep your turf clean, especially if you have pets. If you are able to afford it, and you have done enough research, then maybe it is right for you.

If you live in an area with warm weather for most of the year, this may also be a concern. The concern with synthetic grass in warm weather is that it is known to dramatically rise in temperature. The infill layer of the artificial turf has tiny rubbers that heats up from the warm weather. Sometimes it could be so hot, that it is unbearable to use. However, many turf companies have tried other infill alternatives that prove to provide the same feel and cushion, but also decrease the amount of heat it absorbs. Many people argue however, that when the turf heats up to unbearable temperatures that the original temperature outside is also unbearable.

The real main concern and issue many families face with is the chemicals and accumulation of bacteria. Many research facilities have found that lead, zinc, and arsenic that are contained in the infill could be harmful to anyone who is consistently in contact with these chemicals. Bacteria are also accumulated after heavy usage from sweat, skin, or pet urine. Many artificial turfs have made drastic improvements to their turf that decreases these issues. Fewer chemicals have been found, and they have it to where bacteria no longer linger in the blades of the grass using different materials that make up the blades.

Environmentalists’ main issue is the effect it has on natural grass. Artificial grass does not provide oxygen. All life organisms that live in natural grass seize to exist. Once you install artificial turf, everything that was there is completely gone. The soil is unusable as if it were concrete. If you decide to grow plants or trees later in the future, it wouldn’t be possible. Unless you are 100% with your decision to go with synthetic grass, you should have no regrets.
