Building a DIY flagstone walkway? Flagstone patios and walkways are becoming very common projects many people are take on during the summer. Many people pick flagstone over interlocking brick or cement patio stones to use for a walkway because flagstone unique and natural product.

When installing a flagstone walkway it's important you know what your doing, if it's the first time you've installed flagstone then it's important you avoid making any of the following 5 mistakes.

1: Walkway Width - This is one of the most common mistakes people make. The walkway width looks fine until the whole project is completed and they walk down the walkway side by side with there partner for the first time. Yes you guessed it, it's not wide enough for two people to walk down at the same time.

2: Purchasing Flagstone - Never just pick up the phone and call your local stone supplier to order flagstone. Not one pallet of flagstone the same , each pallet is unique, some are good and some are bad, it's important that you physically see the exact pallet or rows of flagstone your going to buy.

3: Walkway Grade - When installing a walkway always make sure the final height of the flagstone is slightly higher than the surrounding area, if it's level or lower than the surrounding area the water run-off will have a hard time finding a place to go or end up turning your walkway into a shallow stream during a heavy rainfall. Always try divert any water run off away from your house.

4: Flagstone Base - Flagstone needs a solid and well compacted base, not using enough material for the walkway base will only result in problems down the road. After a short time you will see flagstone start sinking and slowly spreading out in different directions.

5: Lack Of Knowledge - A DIY flagstone walkway is not hard to complete, but doing it yourself still means spending money on material. Not knowing how to install your walkway correctly can end up costing you more money and time than you may expect.
