The menstrual cycle is very important to every woman. The monthly period should be free from hassles and normal, however there are some women who have to bear with painful, irregular and abnormal cycles. On the other hand there are certain women who have normal periods yet they suffer from a misconception that their periods are abnormal. The above is solely due to the lack of awareness of the menstrual cycle. The following are important points that must take into consideration as they guide females on when they should see a doctor:

  • Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding: This type of bleeding is different from the menstrual bleeding and it generally entails bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, bleeding after menopause, bleeding heavier or more than normal and spotting anytime in the menstrual cycle.

  • Severe Painful Menstrual Cramps: If a woman faces severe and painful menstrual cramps she should consult a doctor. The doctor will successfully determine the cause of these cramps and prescribe medicines according to the severity of the condition. Menstrual cramps can be experienced by both teenage and older women.

You should see your doctor if:

  • You have no periods for more than 90 days.

  • You suddenly face irregular periods after having regular periods.

  • You are 16 years old and you have not started to menstruate.

  • Your periods have not started within 3 years after breast growth or if breasts have not grown by the age of 13.

  • Your menstrual bleeding exceeds for more than 7 days.

  • Your period takes place more often than every 21 days or less often than every 35 days.

  • You experience bleeding between your periods.

  • You have to use more than one pad or tampon every 1-2 hours as you are bleeding more heavily than usual.

  • You tend to get sick and have high fever during your period.

  • You get muscle aches, fever above 102 degrees, suffer from diarrhea and vomiting, and sunburn like rash, sore throat, bloodshot eyes, dizziness or fainting when using tampons.

Thus, if you suffer from the above symptoms you need to consult a doctor immediately. There are many women who avoid going to the doctor, however, these problems can be serious and need to be checked out. There is a cure or treatment for each problem listed so you should never hesitate consulting your doctor if you face any one or more of the above symptoms.
