It's not that complicated to get over your fear of public speaking. There are 3 things that are key to improving your skills and confidence when speaking in front of an audience.
First you need to understand public speaking and why you think you're afraid of it. Next, you simply need to love public speaking. People aren't afraid of the things they enjoy doing. Lastly, you have to practice it. Practice improves any skills, and giving presentations is no exception.
Understand
It's time to break free from the conditioning of the herd and really think about what you are doing. You are "giving" a speech. If you can focus on that point, that you are giving something of value to other people, it is much easier to overlook your nervousness. Your audience wants to hear what you have to say, and you are providing them with the information they are looking for. Consider your speech to be a gift to your listeners. Who is afraid of giving a gift?
Love
You can't possibly be worried or afraid of something you genuinely love to do. So if you love public speaking, really love it like I do (and thousands of others as well), you won't be afraid.
Now I can hear you saying "But that's the problem, I just don't love it." Ok. Let me ask you a question. Who chooses how you feel about things?
I hope you realize the answer is only ever you.
So, the simple fact is this. You choose how you feel about public speaking. You can choose to hate it, love it or anything in between.
What I'm saying is if you don't choose to love it, then you wil never, ever move past your fear of it. Oh you might learn some handy tricks to help you minimize it, but, you'll never be free of the fear.
This is absolutely not about positive thinking. It's about the proper use of your magnificent mind and the emotions that come with it.
Practice
There's 2 things I know about you.
-
You don't practice public speaking often enough.
-
When you do practice it, you're too worried about how good you are.
The solutions to these two problems are simple and profound.
To move past your fear of public speaking you need to practice more. A lot more. Join a Club. Volunteer to speak. Practice online at my site.
To move past your fear of public speaking you must practice properly. Stop trying to be perfect. In fact stop trying to be better. Just focus on one thing. Enjoying yourself. Go ahead and try it. I've never heard of a perfect speech, but I've seen a lot of speakers really enjoying themselves (and funny enough so did their audiences).
