Language immersion programs are an active part of each and every language course. In this technique, the language to be learned or the target language is made the mode of instruction. Thus, here the language becomes the vehicle for instruction and not the subject of instruction. Immersion can be subdivided into various categories according to the age in which the student is being taught the various aspects of the foreign language. It can also be divided depending on the amount of time that is being devoted behind teaching the language.

Objectives of immersion: There are certain objectives of a language immersion program. It targets at making the students attain a degree of proficiency in the language and enables to let them know about the customs and cultures associated with the language. As a result of immersion, the student gets to know about the practical use that the language can be put to. For example in an English school, where students are taking part in an English course, they not only get to read, write and speak in English but also get to know about the culture of the English speaking countries.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Immersion: Immersion can be total or partial. In total immersion, the whole time is devoted to teaching the language. In partial immersion, only some amount of time is allotted to the learning of the language. Total immersion is however not for all students. Many students find it difficult to learn using foreign language as a mode. Furthermore, every immersion class needs to have a teacher which is a difficult feat to attain.

In partial immersion, there are lesser number of teachers required and therefore it is easier to staff. However, this method is not as effective as total immersion. A high level of proficiency is not acquired unlike the total immersion program. For benefitting in the long run, it is better to pursue total immersion in language courses even though it may seem difficult in the initial stages. The grasp that is gradually developed on the language does not come through partial immersion.

Immersion helps students develop their creative abilities and also sharpens their thinking process. It opens up a wide variety of job prospects in the future as well.
