Contrary to popular belief, learning how to speak a new language does not have to take a long time. The truth is, you can have a great time learning a new language! Focus on the opportunities that speaking another language can bring. If you travel, it can make communication much less of a problem. It's also very likely that you'll be able to communicate more easily with many residents of the city or town where you live. In today's economy, knowing another language can make it easier to get a job. People who live in America are increasingly finding that Spanish is becoming the nation's second language.
Many people living in America today do not even speak English; many of these people are Spanish speaking. Knowing how to speak and translate Spanish into other languages is a valuable skill to have.
When you speak a new language, you want to be understood, which is why you first want to have a Spanish accent or "tongue." You really want to be able to speak Spanish well and have people understand you; this is more fundamental than the grammar or even knowing many words. Read out loud from books in Spanish to get a feel for how the language flows. Another good way to practice speaking is to go somewhere that fluent Spanish is spoken; listen carefully and then later try to duplicate anything you can recall. When you do this, you will start to understand the right way to use inflections and put words together into correct sentences. Start practicing this whenever you can; you may be surprised to find that it's fun. Think of how it felt to learn songs when you were a child; this can be similar. Teach yourself to think in Spanish. Whenever you catch yourself thinking about anything, make the effort to translate whatever it is into Spanish. You won't be able to do this very well at first, but be patient. Anytime you find yourself thinking something, simply try to construct the same words using Spanish. Like any skill, you can become better at it the more you try it. You will get faster at the translation. There will come a point when this will become automatic, and you'll think in Spanish without trying. The next stage is to take your internal thoughts and speak them out loud, so you learn how to converse in Spanish.
You'll learn faster if you can watch Spanish language TV or movies. It's not hard because all movie rental outlets have a foreign language section, plus there are many Spanish broadcasts on TV. You'll be able to learn how Spanish is really spoken without needing to travel. This is helpful if you live somewhere that does not have a large Spanish speaking population to converse with. Just turn on the subtitles when you watch. As your understanding improves, try turning them off and see how you do. Keep doing this, and your learning will improve fast.
You don't have to struggle to learn a new language. If you don't yet have a second language, Spanish is a good one to start with, because it's relatively easy. In today's information age, you can find a variety of options to choose from for achieving this goal. Not everyone has to take the same approach; ask yourself what seems like the best choice. It becomes much easier to learn when you find a teacher, course or system that really appeals to you. If you are patient and you work slowly but steadily you could become fluent in your new language before you know it!
