Certain types of birth control have side effects to them that can cause damage to our bodies. Those of you who are using the birth control patch need to be made aware of what can happen if it does not mix well with your body.

The patch - called Ortho Evra - is one of the newest forms of birth control to hit the market. The fact that you don’t have to take a pill every day makes it more convenient than the birth control pill. Instead it is a transdermal patch that you place on your skin for a week. The patch will release special hormones through the skin and into your bloodstream that help to control your ovulation.

In September of 2006 the FDA made the decision to place a warning on the package of Ortho Evra patch. The warning says that, "high levels of estrogen may put some women at increased risk for getting blood clots." The warning was placed on the box after many women who used the patch were having blood clots and other more serious side effects.

Studies show that the birth control patch can cause blood clots because of the level of hormones being released into the body. The patch contain estrogen that will cause the blood to coagulate in the veins. It will deliver 60% more estrogen into the body than the pill and thus has a higher risk for women to get blood clots.

Blood clots are dangerous because it can create a blockage in the blood vessels. When this happens oxygen and blood do not have the ability to travel to the necessary areas of the body causing tissues to die. Also blood clots can travel to the heart, lungs, and brains. This means that they can be fatal.

These birth control side effects can be serious and are definitely something that women should think about before they decide whether or not they want to use this form of birth control. The FDA has recognized the risks that are involved - but they also say that it can be safe for others. If you are using the patch and you think you might be experiencing problems you will need to speak to your doctor right away and discontinue use.
