You can create terraced flowerbeds simply by using landscaping timber. Real wood landscaping timber is not chemically treated, while plywood is. Therefore, real wood timber can last just for seven or eight years but they are safer and healthier, especially if there are children at home. Plywood logs are treated with more chemicals to last longer.

Planning is essential for creating raised flowerbeds with landscaping timber. First, see how high you want it, and then calculate how much timber you'll need. Remember you'll need four timbers per level, two long and two short, to make a frame. You will need another layer of timber to sink into the ground, especially if it's too high. After you have planned and sketched your timber flowerbed, calculate if the timbers at your store are the size you need or if you'll need to cut them to the size you have calculated.

Building your timber flowerbed

After you buy the landscaping timbers, remove the grass and level the ground. A good idea is to dig a surrounding trench, so it's easier for you to install the first layer of wood. You'll need landscaping nails to fix the timber so it won't move. As you go up, don't forget to put more nails every two or three layers. If you plan to build more than one you can do it in just one day.
