Stress is a condition that all people experience at one time or another, whether they are under pressure at work, managing a busy household, or dealing with personal issues. Those who are unsure of how to deal with stress are at risk for developing both mental and physical ailments. Fortunately, several stress management techniques can effectively reduce feelings of worry, anger, and frustration in a safe and healthy manner.

Engaging in regular exercise is one of the simplest ways to relieve stress. Because physical activities such as walking, bicycling, or light aerobics help to loosen and relax the muscles, people who suffer from a great deal of tension can naturally lower their stress levels through exercise. By concentrating on physical fitness routines, people are better able to clear their minds of stress-inducing thoughts as they improve their overall state of health. Exercising with a partner also offers the opportunity for people to discuss their frustrations and seek advice.

Meditation, another one of the stress release techniques that offers promising results, is often practiced by individuals who wish to relieve their minds and bodies of tension. Meditation involves sitting or resting comfortably in a quiet place, breathing slowly and deeply, and allowing the mind to focus on positive and peaceful thoughts. Some people who meditate to release stress find that playing soft music or listening to sounds of nature helps them to reach a state of deep relaxation. The controlled breathing patterns used in meditation are particularly beneficial for promoting mental and bodily health.

Eating a well balanced diet and establishing regular sleep patterns are additional examples of stress management techniques. Diets that consist of healthy foods such as vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats supply the body with energy that is needed to combat feelings of stress or anxiety. Foods that are filled with sugar should be avoided, as they contribute to poor health and lack of mental clarity. Sleeping at least eight hours a night and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule are essential factors in regulating bodily functions and reducing stress.

Those who need professional advice on how to deal with stress or stress relaxation should consult a medical doctor or mental health counselor for additional suggestions.
