Let's face it: every so often, you get a hypnosis client that you just can't seem to get into trance. Some clients are more receptive to getting in that hypnosis trance than others are, but that doesn't mean that just because somebody doesn't easily go into that trance that they can't. Sometimes, your client simply doesn't seem to be responding. They'll tell you that they're getting "nothing." If this is happening, do not give up! There are several things that you may say to your client to start a trance. Simply telling your client to pretend for a short while as though they are not getting nothing will actually make them get something. You can also ask them to describe exactly what they are feeling and thinking. Any aches they tell you about could be a clue to spend more time relaxing that part of the body.

Some clients relax more naturally than others do. There are many levels of relaxation, and telling your client that it is ok if they are simply in a light relaxed state will often make them feel better about their current situation and can often make them relax more. Being in a state of light relaxation is certainly better than not being in a state of relaxation at all.

If your client appears to be uncomfortable being hypnotized, you should make sure to reassure them. Let them know that "Hypnosis is completely safe" and "This will be a very positive experience." Insert comments such as these as you are going through your relaxation exercises with them.
